Slope PointWhy the trees grow sideways.

At the southern edge of New Zealand's South Island, a stand of trees seems to have been swept into a permanent wave. The explanation is not a single extraordinary storm, but the long influence of wind on living growth.

A real landscape in the Catlins, Southland — and a visible lesson in how exposure shapes vegetation.

01. Where is Slope Point?

Slope Point is the southernmost point of the South Island of New Zealand. It lies in Southland, near the Catlins, where exposed farmland meets a rugged coastline. It is not the southernmost point of the whole country: New Zealand also includes Stewart Island/Rakiura and islands farther south.

The location is known for its cliffs, a signpost marking the distances to the Equator and South Pole, and a group of remarkably windswept trees. The trees were planted as shelter for livestock. Their shape makes the local climate visible even in a still photograph.

Why do the trees grow sideways? Persistent exposure to strong winds changes how their branches survive and develop. Over many growing seasons, the more sheltered growth persists while exposed growth is repeatedly damaged or constrained.

02. Why is this coast so windy?

New Zealand sits in the belt of prevailing westerly winds of the Southern Hemisphere. Across the Southern Ocean, there is relatively little land to interrupt that flow. The strong mid-latitude winds are often called the Roaring Forties.

At Slope Point, the exposed coast also receives powerful southerly weather. The exact wind direction and strength change with the weather; the trees are not evidence that the wind blows from one direction every minute. What matters is repeated exposure over years, not a photograph of one windy afternoon.

The wider lesson is geographic: latitude, the surrounding ocean and local exposure combine to produce a particular environment. A sheltered valley and an open headland can experience very different growing conditions within the same region.

03. How does wind change a tree's shape?

A tree does not become permanently bent because one gust pushes it over. Wood and branches grow over time, while wind can damage exposed shoots, increase drying and create a strong difference between the windward and sheltered sides of the crown. Growth that survives in the protected direction can gradually dominate the shape.

In forestry, a one-sided, wind-shaped crown is often called flagging. The exact appearance depends on the species, age, exposure and local conditions. The name describes a growth form, not a separate kind of tree.

Some of the dramatic stems at Slope Point also reflect years of physical bending and growth. The result is a living structure shaped by its environment, rather than a tree frozen in the position of a passing gust.

Follow the trunk, then the surviving branches. The unusual silhouette is a record of growth under exposure. The photograph shows the result; the explanation lies in the many seasons that produced it.

04. Is this unique to Slope Point?

No. Windswept and flagged trees occur in other exposed coastal and mountain environments. The same broad principle can produce different forms: a one-sided crown, a low shrub-like tree or a stand whose branches lean together. Wind, temperature, moisture and shelter all influence the outcome.

What makes Slope Point memorable is the combination of the open southern coastline, the planted shelter trees and their unusually coherent shape. It is a particularly clear example of a wider ecological process, not a place where the laws of nature work differently.
